Rhyming Re-visted

One way I've introduced the concept of rhyming is to play nonsense rhymes with the students' names and pictures of familiar objects.

We sing just this line to Raffi's Willoghby Wallaby song and then let the kids fill in the pause/blank.

Willoughby Wallaby Wanny
An elephant sat on _______ (Danny)
(we repeat this so that all of the kids have a turn.)

Then I put up pictures of common objects on the felt board and sing it with those:

Willougby Wallaby Wable
An elephant sat on a ______(table)

Kelly's Kindergarten also has a power point you can download for free for the song Down By The Bay. She includes a link for the music as well.

You'll find other strategies that I use in this previous post.

Hi Michelle,
I am a special education teacher in regional Victoria, Australia. I had a great time looking around your blog today. I will add you to my links and come back to visit often.

Hi Sue-
Please come back and visit! My husband and I are hoping to be able to visit Australia some day. We tend to drive distances well with each other so we love to find interesting places that aren't necessarily in tour guides....maybe you could offer some ideas!

A very timely post for me! My 6-year-old has autism and is struggling a bit with rhyming. He is in a mainstream kindergarten with an aide and I am looking for some things I can do with him at hope to help fill in the gap. Thank you for all the ideas!

You might want to try some word family sorts with pictures and the printed words (sat, cat, bat, fat). I have often found that children with autism tend to be strong visual learners. The skill of rhyming is essentially an auditory skill. If you could show him a pattern visually maybe that will help to spark something too!
